distributors
Does anyone know why the lucas and ducellier distributors are not inter-changeable on an a series?. All the component pieces fit ok but as soon as you offer them up to the block the ducellier is 1/4 of an inch too long

They are both a series so theoretically they fit? the drive is lined up Should they be interchangeable?

MD310SP and Distributor timing
Hi, I was looking for the timing for the MD310SP cam, is it 106 or 100 degrees. Is it detrimental for my engine if I change the distributor timing, I have changed the advance inside. When my car is idling I have the timing set at 22 degrees and at full advance at around 2500rpm it is at 29 degrees, can this advance low down be bad for my engine. Thanks

I have the same cam in my race car. It is 106. What distributor are you running? Is this a street car or race? Big cam for street. The cam does not come on power until 4000 rpm. I use a stock out of the box Aldon Red, no changes made. Timing is set at 30-32 degrees at 4000rpm. Not sure I can answer your question regarding if your set up is detramental to your engine.

distributor drive
Hi I think you can fit it see haynes manual if i can remember correctly you can screw a long bolt into the end and use this to locate the drive then remove the bolt the haynes manual covers it all so id check there first Ian

Electrical - Distributor Problem S.O.S.
Hallo from Greece.
Please HEEELP!
I have a 10H791 engine, that has been recently restored. The distributor point plate has been damaged so I was forced to change the entire distributor. The older one was 25D Lucas and the new (used item) is 45D. One month later the ignition coil got off and I change it. Last week happened the same problem, I changed it twice but nothing... My questons are: Is it rigth fitting the 45D? What can be the problem with ingition coil? (Should I change it with a better one and which) Is there any low budge solution ?

Have you read the thread called 'Hot Coil' I wonder if you have a similar problem. As far as I know the type of distributor isn't as important to the engine as it is to the wiring harness, because I also have a 45D with electronic ignition module which I swapped from a 25D. The ignition unit attached to the distributor can run with the higher current that's created by running the worng coil but eventually something will die :-(
Is your 45d the electronic version or the points version ?

No My distributor is with points...
And is not just the coil probem... I changed coil and put one with ballast resistor... nothing again.
is there any posibility to be something wrong with the time that the point is close?
I look the specs for distributors in the haynes manual 0646, and the dwell angle for 25D is 60 deegres and for 45D is 51 to 57 deegres.
What is the difference beteewn the two angles?

Oh dear.
The dwell angle is selected to produce the best energising/de-energising cycle times for the coils. Although there are differences as you have pointed out, either of those distributors will work in an otherwise functioning engine, as long as the points gap is set properly.
You haven't said if you have points or an electronic version of the distributor. if you have points and they are set correctly it is sometimes worth checking that the moving arm of the points set is isolated from ground. You can do this with a simple meter. Alternatively you can attach one side of a 12V bulb to battery +ve and the other side to the points contact wire, whenever the points close the bulb lights and this is also good for checking strange points related problems.
There should be a condenser connected in parallel with the points, it's job is to slow down the rate of discharge of the coil. Sometimes they can short circuit, expecially if they have suffered physical damage even in a small way. It is alright to disconnect the condenser to test if it is faulty, because the engine will still run without it. I did once crush a condensor in the palm of my hand while trying to fix another problem and made things worse without knowing it !
Probably you have already tested that you have 12V to the +ve of the coil.
If you check the distributor points with the bulb you will be able to prove where the problem is.
If the distributor is electronic it will have a small black plastic ignition unit attached to the side. You can again test it with a bulb but not any bulb more powerful than a standard 12volt 21Watt bulb. or smaller. but to test the electronic ignition version you need to turn the ignition on and the starter motor turning the engine over
I think if you can tell me which of these tests worked and which didn't work the problem component will be easier to find

Distributor clamp problem
Hi all,
While trying to fit a late electronic distributor to a 998 A+ engine, the finger type clamp seems to tall at the back causing the bolt to be too high and hence fouls the bottom of the distributor.
Looking at my 1275 A+ engine (ex MG Metro), the back of the clamp is noticeably smaller and hence the bolt goes in further and (just) clears the base of the distributor.
MiniSpares list two clamps, 613857A (pre 85) and TAM1671 (85 on). Is it safe to assume the later one is the lower one and suitable for electronic distributors, or is there some other fundamental difference with, say the face of the block, on a 998 compared to a 1275.
Note, I realise I have all sorts of other problems like advance curve, but I'll only worry about them if I can actually get it to fit !!!
Thanks in advance.
Rod.

Distributor
Hey,
Just a quick question.
Iv got a ducellier distributor on my 85 mini mayfair, first question...why french parts?
My main question is is it a straight sway to put a Lucas one in? as mine is on its way out and ducellier seem harder to get hold of, or is there a an "affordable" upgrade i could carry out?
Luke

Hi Luke
Should be fairly easy to replace, allparts stock the lucas ones, just make sure uve got all the connections right :)
ps. might be worth changing the ignition coil at the same time as well, id recommend it :)
